More about Alison
I’ve been studying physiotherapy since 2006 and was based at Glasgow Caledonian University. I completed my honours degree in 2010 and a masters in 2012. The masters specialised in musculoskeletal physiotherapy – treating sore muscles and joints. Since then, I have never stopped learning. I’ve studied Pilates, specialist treatment techniques and ways to diagnose injuries.
While completing my masters degree, I started working in the Western Isles Hospital. I worked on the surgical ward with patients having orthopaedic and general surgery. I also spent time in the outpatients department. This variety gave me a wealth of knowledge and experience in orthopaedic services. I enjoyed working with the physiotherapy and consultant teams and learning their protocols.
From Lewis, I moved home to Shetland at the end of 2013. At the time I had planned to return to mainland Scotland in early 2014 to work in the NHS. This changed when I was offered a job in private practice in Shetland, and I never left.
I was privileged to join Team Shetland at two Natwest Island Games – Jersey 2015 and Gotland 2017. As part of the physiotherapy team I helped look after more than 100 Shetland athletes. Quite the challenge during a busy week long competition! The 2019 Natwest Island Games was held in Gibraltar – this time I was competing in Table Tennis.
Outside physiotherapy and sport, I enjoy playing the fiddle. I’ve played with Hjaltibonhoga at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo since 2014. This has also taken me around the world – to Australia, New Zealand, Norway and Germany.
